Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was a Concord, California native to Janet Marylyn Hanks, a hospital worker, and Amos Mefford Hanks an itinerant cook. His mother's family, originally called "Fraga" was completely Portuguese, while his father was mostly of English heritage. Tom was born into the family of a "fractured family". He was not an actor at the college level and credits the failure to get cast in a college play as the reason for his beginning his professional career. He tried out for auditions in downtown Cleveland for a show in the theater for community members. Director invited him to Cleveland and that's when his acting career began.
